Mandel’s Dreamery at Makom, 402 College

Mandel Dairy sign with Yiddish scriptWalk past the window of this storefront just east of Croft Street, and you’ll see the sign from Mandel’s Creamery, once a bustling enterprise on Baldwin. Read about the sign, the Mandel family, and the long Jewish history in our area in a Toronto Star story by Sarah-Joyce Battersby; photo by Vince Talotta. The display is by Fentster, an organization that promotes contemporary art dealing with Jewish themes. The site is the new home of Makom, in its own words “a grassroots downtown community, building traditional and progressive Jewish life in Toronto.”
