Hello Neighbours,
Pomegranate at 420 College Street (near Bathurst) has been a neighbourhood treasure for more than 20 years. On Thursday September 17th at 6pm, co-owner Danielle Schrage will welcome 18 of us for a sumptuous feast of Persian food. Unlike most of our monthly dinners and lunches, the food will be served family-style. Platters of appetizers and mains will be passed around for people to take what they want. The cost will be $60 per person (i.e., $45 + tax and tip). Non-alcoholic drinks are included.
Our meal with start with 4 appetizers, each served with Iranian flatbread. This will be followed by 5 main dishes, accompanied by saffron basmati rice and some salad. Lastly a small dessert will be provided to each of us.
To whet our appetites, here is a sample of the dishes we’re likely to be served. All of the following appetizers are vegetarian:
Mirza Qasemi – Purée of smoky charred eggplant cooked in a garlic tomato sauce
Dolmeh – Grape vine leaves filled with a lemony blend of rice and herbs
Maast o Khiar -Rich creamy yogurt with English cucumber, rose petals, mint and walnut
Zeitoon Parvardeh – Green olives marinated in pomegranate walnut sauce with garlic and mint
Here are 5 mains we’re likely to see too:
Baqali Polo – Dill and fava beans steamed into saffron basmati rice served w/ (de-boned ) braised lamb shank
Qeymeh – A savoury stew of yellow split peas, beef chunks, sun-dried lime cooked in a tomato saffron sauce topped w/ cinnamon
Fesenjaan with Chicken – Stew of ground walnut and pomegranate reduction w/ chicken breast OR
Fesenjaan with Mushrooms – A vegan ground walnut and pomegranate reduction cooked into a rich stew with pieces of cremini & oyster mushrooms
Aloo Gheysi – Stew of boneless chicken thigh pieces cooked in a Bukhara plum, apricot & saffron sauce, topped with barberries + saffron basmati rice.
As mentioned, space is limited to 18 people. If interested, please RSVP as soon as you can to monthlydiners@harbordvillage.com.
