Rooftop Solar Energy Discounts

The NetZero committee has negotiated discounts with four GTA solar installers that come highly recommended. Apart from saving money, why would you add a solar photovoltaic (electricity-producing) system to your rooftop? One obvious reason is to reduce your electrical bill. The more people install solar, the cheaper those systems become, as we’ve seen in the last fifteen years. Wherever residents install rooftop solar, the local electrical grid becomes more resilient, as less power needs to be delivered into our neighbourhoods.

To help meet their 2040 climate change targets, the City of Toronto is urging everyone who can to switch to electric heat pumps, electric water heaters, and electric vehicles. As people switch, this will increase electricity consumption. Installing rooftop solar can compensate for some of this increase, and in so doing, help to keep electricity rates low for everyone. Finally, rooftop systems extend the lives of roofs and increase the value of homes.

Is Your Roof Suitable?

There are many variables to consider: whether your roof is north, south, east or west facing, how many trees shade your roof and the size and shape of the roof. To get an idea of your roof’s solar potential size, cost and payback, enter your address at the City’s SolarTO map. Rooftop solar panels last up to 30 years and pay for themselves within seven to twelve years.

Cost and Rebates

To help homeowners find reputable and qualified installers, the Net Zero team reviewed the work of companies that have installed solar on older downtown homes. We vetted their references and negotiated discounts for homeowners—typically ~5%. (See the discount details below.) The four selected companies all come highly recommended.

Once you have decided that you are ready for rooftop solar, reach out to one or more of the following four installers. Without visiting your home, they will provide an estimate based on an aerial view of your roof using GPS software. If their estimate is reasonable to you, they will come to your house to do a more formal assessment.
