To get a Home Energy Assessment you need to hire a Natural Resources Canada registered energy advisor. They conduct a top-to-bottom assessment of your home which typically includes a blower-door test to find air leaks and an inspection of your insulation and heating and cooling systems.
Your energy advisor will provide a detailed report which rates how your home uses energy. They also provide a renovation upgrade report on how to improve the energy efficiency of your home. And finally, your advisor will provide information on grants and rebates you may qualify for to do this work. Most, but not all, incentive and rebate programs require an official home energy assessment.
Many home energy advisors recommend that you prioritize your home’s building shell before installing new heating and cooling systems.
- Fix air leaks and upgrade insulation
- Replace drafty windows and doors
- Once the home is airtight then you can look at upgrading to a smaller more efficient heating/cooling system (such as a heat pump)
- After improving your home’s energy efficiency, you should consider installing solar panels/battery walls or other renewable energy sources
