Dear neighbourhood artists!

I am very excited by an upcoming outreach opportunity from Trinity St Pauls - to neighbourhood artists - to get together to talk about what the Centre for Faith, Justice and the Arts can do to advance the arts in our community over the next 5 years. The meeting is at 3 pm on Sunday afternoon, Nov 2, at the Church. I really hope you will come AND BRING YOUR IDEAS. I am an artist too, and really love this chance to consider how we can support each other and our work in some small ways, and maybe some big ways!!

Two Items to be Approved at the AGM October 21

The Board has been deliberating on two items that it will bring to the AGM for your approval On Tuesday Oct 21.

I apologize for the length of of this email.... but we are required by the constitution to do so for item #1 and by our desire to come to you, our constituents for approval of the kind of proposal that is contained in item #2.

1: The creation of a new board position called Communications Director
The way we communicate with you our members and with those outside the membership has changed dramatically since we were founded in 2000 -eg the Newsletter and the Website. Up to date we have assigned these tasks to various members of the Board but as the work is so much more complicated and time consuming, it is now time to have a full time position to deal with such matters alone

All Candidates Forum October 6th at the JCC

As we have done over the last several years at election time, HVRA is sponsoring
An All Candidates Forum to be held at
The Miles Nadal Jewish Community Center in the Al Green Theatre
Monday October 6th
from 7:30 to 10:30 pm

It is always a well attended event and we advise early arrival to get a seat.
The format will the same as previous years i.e.
Each candidate will present an opening statement after which the floor will be opened for questions from you the electorate. As we will want to have as many questions from the audience as possible, questioners will be limited to a two sentence preamble before posing their questions.

Sadly Cancelled : HVRA Fall Fair

Hi all

The weather for Sunday is predicted to be:
-60% chance of precipitation
-Showers are predicted for the whole day and for Monday
-The clearing trend is not happening till Tuesday so we cannot even hope for the weather blowing through a little faster.

So I think it is time to make a decision so we can cut our losses to the Association
-The Beer and wine have not yet been purchased
-the bulk of the food has not yet been purchased
-we can cancel the toilet, the police, the security
-the rentals can be canceled today but not tomorrow
As most of you know, this is a very special event to me personally and it with heavy heart that I inform you now that the event has to be cancelled for 2008.

The Great HVRA Fall Fair is this Sunday - Sept 14!!

Yes the event that really Rocks in Harbord Village is upon us!

Place: Margaret Fairley Park - corner of Ulster and Brunswick
Time: Noon to appx 7 pm
Day: Sunday September 14th

Come along for a great afternoon where you can meet and greet your neighbours and participate in so many wonderful things brought to you by one of the best and most active resident associations in Toronto - your very own HVRA
Here are some of the things on the programme:

-Non-stop live music - see schedule below
-Silent Auction -includes neat stuff from local merchants as well as great meals

Two ways we can improve the Harbord Village Forest.

Dear HVRA Members
The question from our Treeing the Village Committee is this:

Do you want to help maintain the urban forest in our community?

Our Tree Inventory is now almost complete. At http://harbordvillage.com/trees., you can scroll down to see the 2007 report and associated files. Soon, the completed 2008 report will be posted there. Now HVRA's Treeing the Village committee is building on that work in two new and important ways.

1. Backyard Tree Planting: In Spring 2008, HVRA used a grant from the Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation to plant 45 new trees in neighbourhood back yards. Many of your neighbours received trees worth from $100 to $200 for a token payment of only $20. Now you have another chance to get your own backyard tree. Download the Tree List found on the HVRA website to see which trees we recommend as most suitable to city conditions, along with links to photos and further information about each type. If you want to plant a tree this Fall, we need to hear from you by September 26. And volunteers to help plant the trees on Saturday October 25th are especially welcome. Reminder: Farmers' Market Today

Hello dear friends and members of HVRA

Just a short reminder that the wonderful Farmers' Market is on today in the Green P Parking Lot south of Bloor at Borden
The market is really hitting its stride so come along and buy the most wonderful produce Ontario can give us: cheese, every fruit and vegetable imaginable, bread, eggs, beef most either organic or the next step from it.
Speak to the farmers who grow these things and schmooze with your neighbours as you choose your tomatoes.

Farmers' Market Today!

The Farmers' Market in the Green P Parking Lot south of Bloor at Borden
is a veritable wonder of all the glory that Ontario Farmers can produce!
Come along and see for yourselves!
Fruits, vegetables, cheese, meat, bread, eggs --all freshly harvested that day or the night before
Minimal fertilizers and pesticides.... some certified organic....
and the TASTE.....!!!
Every Wednesday - 3 to 7 pm till the end of October

Can you recommend an arborist for the Harbord Village?

Greetings.
Yesterday, HVRA's Treeing the Village committee emailed a request for proposals from five tree care companies to become our Village Arborist. By early August, we will have selected a company that will (1) provide a discount on its services to the 200-400 residents that are expected to sign up for this project, and (2) will be pro-active in inspecting the trees of those same residents and providing quotes about tree pruning. (As soon as the selection process is completed, a flyer will be delivered door-to-door, with instructions for how to sign up.)

We need your help. We'd like to send our request for proposals to more tree care companies. If you liked the service you received from a tree care company, please send their name and any contact information you may have as soon as possible to:

Adam Vaughan Environment Day this Saturday

Dear Member of HVRA

On July 5th, Councillor Vaughan is hosting the annual Ward 20 Community
Environment Day at Central Technical School (Borden & Harbord).
This year we are combining regular "Environment Day" activities (free
compost, recycling household hazardous waste, sign up for a free tree,
etc...) with a community BBQ.

The event takes place from 10 am - 2 pm.
