Everyone is invited to a meeting to hear about some exciting neighbourhood tree projects:
* Sign up for ½ price trees and volunteers to help plant them in your backyard in early May.
* Bring your tree care questions to help us plan free workshops with forestry experts in May.
* Find out about the health of neighbourhood trees - and your own - from our Summer 2007 tree inventory and hear our plans to complete the inventory this Summer.
The Comfort Zone

As most of you will know by now, the Comfort Zone [at the corner of Spadina and College beside the Silver Dollar] was raided on Friday night. We have been unhappy with the CZ for several years and there have been many complaints... we are glad that this establishment is now on the radar screen of the authorities.
What the Police found was in essence a Drug Supermarket.
Councillor Adam Vaughan is working hard on this with a view to closing it for good.
In the meantime, it will re-open tonight after midnight but there will be a large Police presence all night and for as long as they are open.
HVRA Sponsors the Downtown West Solar Energy Project Meeting

The Downtown West Solar Energy Project is a community-based solar energy system bulk buying project. Sponsored by the Harbord Village Residents' Association, and co-chaired by HVRA board members Tim Grant and David Booz, the DWSEP has been helping local residents learn more about solar energy systems for their homes.
DWSEP participants have already purchased 12 photovoltaic systems from the PV vendor, Solera Sustainable Energies. Participants have also purchased 16 solar hot water systems from our hot water vendor, Goldwater Solar Services. The majority of these systems have been installed and are generating electricity and hot water, to the delight of the solar energy pioneers who have invested in this exciting technology.
HVRA and Earth Hour

It started last year in Sydney, Australia. A small idea. The Citizens of Sydney decided to turn their lights out for an hour to send a message there is a need for action on climate change. More than two million people joined. They saved 24.86 Tonnes of carbon dioxide, took the equivalent of 48,613 cars off the road for an hour... all by turning off their lights!
This year, it is going worldwide. Cities as diverse as Atlanta, San Francisco, Copenhagen, Chicago, Tel Aviv, Bangkok, Phoenix, Ottawa, and yes the city of Toronto, have signed on. We can send a signal of concern about greenhouse gas emissions and the environment by saving power by swtching off for an hour from 8 to 9 pm on Saturday March 29

The New Recycling Bins

As you know from the mailer from the City, the new recycling bins are now on offer.
There are things to applaud about the new system but some things are not quite right, in our opinion, about the "one solution fits all" system that comes with it
Some good things [we think]:
Garbage and Recycling will be off the property tax and those who throw out more will pay more.... anything that makes people think about what is going into our trash and recycling is a good thing
It is also good that there is an attempt to invent a system that is more automated and less labour intensive... but the method selected..[Trucks with arms that pick up and dump] works best in suburban streets and less well downtown where there is on-street parking
HVRA's Treeing the Village committee needs you!

HVRA's Treeing the Village committee has received a $25,000 grant from the City of Toronto to provide subsidized backyard trees this Spring to up to 350 area residents that want them. We'll soon be distributing flyers door to door to publicize this opportunity. We're also contacting all of absentee landlords to encourage them to purchase backyard trees for their properties. And we'd like to recruit interpreters who can describe our offer to our Chinese, Italian and Portuguese neighbours in their first language. We hope that Central Tech students will help us dig all the holes for the new trees on the last weekend in April, so that we can plant the trees on the first weekend in May.
